Sleeping Bag Temperature Ratings Explained

The EN Rating scale is a scientific test to determine the warmth of a sleeping bag. The test produces a Lower rating (for male sleepers) and a Comfort rating (for female sleepers). Both are listed in the features table on the product page.

A unisex sleeping bag with a Lower limit of 23ºF means a man should be comfortable down to air temperatures of 23ºF. The same bag will also have a Comfort limit, in the realm of 32°F, so a woman would be comfortable down to an air temperature of 32ºF. These ratings require a sleeping mat with an R-Value appropriate for expected ground temperatures – without this, the sleeping bag itself is unlikely to keep the sleeper warm enough.

A variety of factors impact sleeping bag warmth - the above temperatures are merely guidelines, not guarantees. It’s important to think of a sleeping bag, an appropriately insulating sleeping pad and a liner as a sleep system. For example - if you plan on sleeping in nighttime air temperatures of 27ºF / -3°C, choose a bag with a gender-appropriate rating of 23°F / -5°C, plus a sleeping mat with an R-Value of 2.5 to 3, and consider a Reactor thermal liner.

Description

For those backcountry chefs whose appetites were whetted by the high-tech design of Sea to Summit Alloy cookware, but who love the simple durability of stainless steel, wait no longer.

The Sigma™ Series of Cook Pots brings technical features such as the Pivot-Lock™ handle (that locks securely into place during use and locks away for transportation), the silicone Lid Keep™ (to rest the lid on the side of your pot during cooking), and a grippy black base (for better heat absorption) to the realm of stainless steel cookware.

Made of marine-grade stainless steel, Sigma™  Cook Pots nest neatly with the Delta Light tableware to create camp kitchen sets for every occasion.

Can the Sigma™ Pots…?

  • Be washed in a dishwasher? No. The handle pivot is made of anodized aluminum which would be damaged by the caustic cleanser used in dishwashers.

  • Be used on an open fire? Only with care. The silicone-rubber grip could be damaged by the heat of a fire or contact with flames.

  • Be used with an induction stove? No. Induction stoves require pots made of a magnetic material (neither the Sigma™ or Alpha Pots will work).

Which pot should I choose?

Size Guide:

  • 1.2 liter: perfect for the solo backpacker
  • 1.9 liter: ideal for two people
  • 2.7 liter: designed for groups of two or three
  • 3.7 liter: groups of three to four

What matters most?

  • Weight: The Alpha Pot Series is our lightest range of cookware.
  • Packed Volume: The X-Pot Series collapses almost completely flat.
  • Durability: The Sigma Pot Series is our most durable cookware option.

FEATURES

  • Large internal radius makes the pot easy to clean
  • Each pot has a strainer lid for efficient draining
  • Marine-grade stainless steel for durability
  • Patent-pending Pivot-Lock handle with safety lock for secure and easy operation
  • Graded scale on the side of the pot for precise measurement
  • Grippy, heat-absorbing base for better stability on camping stoves
  • Stove Use: Domestic stoves have a much higher output than backpacking stoves. If Sigma™ Cookware is used with a home stove, keep the flame setting low, and take care that the pot does not boil dry

Technical Features

Pivot-Lock™ Handle

Made of stainless steel with a silicone rubber grip, Pivot-Lock™ Handles are part of the superior engineering found in Sea to Summit’s range of Alpha Pots & Pans and Sigma Pots. In the pots, the handle rotates to secure the lid in place for transportation (no more lids rattling in your pack…) then swivels around to be secured in place with a one-hand operated thumb lock. This gives you the security to pick up even pots filled with hot food without the worry of the handle wobbling or becoming detached from the pot.

In the pans, the handle swivels underneath the pan (away from the cooking surface), then swings back into place to be locked with an easy-to-use mechanism. You can flip pancakes to your heart’s content, knowing the handle will stay securely in place.
