Sleeping Bag Temperature Ratings Explained

The EN Rating scale is a scientific test to determine the warmth of a sleeping bag. The test produces a Lower rating (for male sleepers) and a Comfort rating (for female sleepers). Both are listed in the features table on the product page.

A unisex sleeping bag with a Lower limit of 23ºF means a man should be comfortable down to air temperatures of 23ºF. The same bag will also have a Comfort limit, in the realm of 32°F, so a woman would be comfortable down to an air temperature of 32ºF. These ratings require a sleeping mat with an R-Value appropriate for expected ground temperatures – without this, the sleeping bag itself is unlikely to keep the sleeper warm enough.

A variety of factors impact sleeping bag warmth - the above temperatures are merely guidelines, not guarantees. It’s important to think of a sleeping bag, an appropriately insulating sleeping pad and a liner as a sleep system. For example - if you plan on sleeping in nighttime air temperatures of 27ºF / -3°C, choose a bag with a gender-appropriate rating of 23°F / -5°C, plus a sleeping mat with an R-Value of 2.5 to 3, and consider a Reactor thermal liner.

If lightweight is your goal and comfort is your priority, the Ultralight Air Mat may be perfect for you. The mat was awarded Gear of the Year by National Geographic Adventure and earned Best New Gear from Gear Institute in 2014 for its innovative construction and ease of use. Using Air Sprung Cell™ technology with a single layer of medium resolution cells, this mat offers a minimal packed size and weight. Ideal for adventure racers, lightweight backpack or bikepacking adventures or anyone looking for warmer-weather comfort.

Our blog post "Which Mat Should I Choose" has some helpful tips on picking the perfect air mat. If you're looking for added comfort consider the Comfort Light or for added warmth the Ultralight Insulated.

Is this Ultralight Sleeping Mat...?

  • Noisy when I shift around in my sleep? No. The uprated outer material is very quiet. Your tent mate will thank you in the morning.

  • Really comfortable being only 2” thick? Yes. Thickness is not the key factor in an air mattress; the number of points of suspension is. Your body weight is supported by 181 individual air-filled pockets (size Regular)

  • Suitable for colder weather? No. This mat does not have additional internal insulation, so it is intended for warm to cool-weather camping. For colder conditions, check out the Ultralight Insulated Air Mat.

Regular: 13.9 oz ≈ Lighter than a roll of paper towels

Summer Mat: Perfect for late Spring to early Fall.

The strongest face fabric and laminate available in a backpacking air mat. It’s a statement of tough love – we make things tough, so you will love them.

  • Integrated pump/stuff sack. Two or three breaths are all that’s necessary to bring the mat up to pressure. No dizziness and virtually no moisture from condensed breath.
  • 40/30D high-tensile nylon face fabric – the strongest face fabric available in an air mat.
  • An anti-microbial treatment is added to the liquid extrusion TPU lamination to prevent delamination/mold issues caused by moist air trapped inside the mat.

      Technical Features

      Single Layer Air Sprung Cells™

Air Sprung Cells™ are the core technology used in Sea to Summit Air Mats and are the reason you will sleep more comfortably on a Sea to Summit mat than on a conventional air pad. Inspired by the hundreds of springs found in a modern pocket sprung mattress, the hundreds of small interconnected chambers (called Air Sprung Cells™) perfectly support your weight and conform to your body contours.

The Ultra Light range has a single layer of medium resolution cells to give you the lightest and smallest packed volume mat without compromising on Sea to Summit's Air Sprung Cell comfort.

      Integrated AirStream™

The Airstream™ Pumpsack is Sea to Summit's big volume mattress pump which we've now integrated into the stuff sack of every Air Sprung Cell™ mat. The clever design opens at one end to stow the air mat and the other end unfolds to become the built-in pump.

The Airstream™ Pumpsack can be inflated with a single breath and takes just two or three cycles to fill our mats. Not only is it faster than inflation by mouth, but there is minimal breath condensation entering the mat and it eliminates dizziness from blowing the mat up directly by mouth.

The Airstream™ Pumpsack is also compatible with Sea to Summit's smaller multifunction valve, which is now featured on the updated Aeros pillow range, along with the Air Seats.

Sea to Summit uses an anti-microbial finish in two different applications.

The internal laminate of Sea to Summit Air Sprung Cell mats is treated with an anti-microbial compound to prevent mold (which could otherwise result from condensed breath moisture remaining in the mat for long periods)

The fabric of Expander liners has an anti-microbial finish to keep the knitted poly-cotton fabric fresh and odor free.

      Both finishes are permanent.

      30D/40D Nylon Face Fabric

The uprated high tensile yarn, high thread count 30/40D ripstop nylon face fabric of our Air Sprung Cell™ sleeping mats is quiet, light and extremely durable. On the inside, we apply a bright white TPU to make the fabric airtight and weldable - it also contains a permanent antimicrobial treatment to ensure mold will not form on the inside of the mat. These characteristics combine to form the strongest, most durable air mat fabric available.

On the outside, we apply a thin proprietary coating to reduce the slipperiness of the surface, increase water resistance, and aid puncture repair with the included self-adhesive patches.
