Sea to Summit proudly supports the American Hiking Society in their mission to promote and protect foot trails, their surrounding natural areas, and the hiking experience. AHS Ambassador, Saveria Tilden was kind enough to share with us the ins and outs of her Sea to Summit gear kit and some tips for the trail.
When asked if I could share my favorite Sea to Summit items, I jumped at the chance. I always have some or all of the following items with me on the trail. Here are my favorites!
Keeping your snacks handy. In the lid of my pack, you will find my Ultra-Sil® View Dry Sack filled with my food for the day. The clear window allows me to easily see my snacks and I love the piece of mind that my food will stay dry even if the weather turns. This lightweight sack is also great for clothes and being able to quickly sort through your items without unpacking everything.
The spoon that will change your life. Inside this food sack, you will find the only utensil I bring with me, my AlphaLight long spoon. If you have been eating your dehydrated backpacking meals, or my current day-hike lunch favorite “deli tuna” in a pouch, with a regular spoon or spork, the long spoon will change your life. No more messy hands from reaching into the bag to eat or stir your food and no more dry food hiding in the corners that didn’t get stirred in because you couldn’t reach it.
The tiniest backpack ever. I love bringing this little guy with me. Only 2.4oz and a little bigger than a film canister, for those of you old enough to remember what that is. The Ultra-Sil Day Pack makes an awesome summit pack. I also keep this tiny gem in my car for trips to the store or other times I may need a bag.
Sweet dreams are made of these. A good night’s sleep in the backcountry can mean the difference between a great trip and a miserable one, so my sleep system is key. The Aeros Pillow Premium and Comfort Plus Insulated Mat are my dreamy duo. I used to do the jacket in the stuff sack pillow, but after using the Aeros pillow I will never camp without it. The new sleeping mat line from Sea to Summit has unique air Sprung Cell™ technology creating pockets of comfort. Both the pillow and the mat have a special valve that allows you to micro-adjust the firmness. Bonus accessory: a bit of a luxury, but totally worth the weight especially at higher elevations, the Air Stream Pump Sack makes inflating your mat a breeze.
